What is “Good” Therapy?

Psychotherapy is a complex and confusing field, with many treatment options. You may be in individual, couple, family or group therapy. You may have insight-oriented therapy, or be in cognitive behavioral treatment. Perhaps you are receiving medication for depression, anxiety or a mood disorder.

Despite the variety of treatment options, good therapy rests on a foundation of a few important principles.

  1. Therapy takes place in an environment that feels safe and private.
  2. Your confidentiality is protected.
  3. You believe that your therapist is working on your behalf and is actively trying to know you.
  4. You begin to know yourself in new and important ways.
  5. You have a sense of who your therapist is as a person, and how he or she feels about you.
  6. You feel free to ask questions.
  7. You begin to develop a sense of hope.

If these elements are present you are probably in treatment with a competent therapist.

Trust your instincts!
