Psychotherapy is a complex and confusing field, with many treatment options. You may be in individual, couple, family or group therapy. You may have insight-oriented therapy, or be in cognitive behavioral treatment. Perhaps you are receiving medication for depression, anxiety or a mood disorder.
Despite the variety of treatment options, good therapy rests on a foundation of a few important principles.
- Therapy takes place in an environment that feels safe and private.
- Your confidentiality is protected.
- You believe that your therapist is working on your behalf and is actively trying to know you.
- You begin to know yourself in new and important ways.
- You have a sense of who your therapist is as a person, and how he or she feels about you.
- You feel free to ask questions.
- You begin to develop a sense of hope.
If these elements are present you are probably in treatment with a competent therapist.
